I really can’t see what all the fuss is about with R-Patz. To me he’s just a funny looking, moody guy with too much hair. There’s talk of him being the next Bond, which would be a disaster, and even worse are the rumours that he might play Jeff Buckley in Mystery White Boy, the forthcoming film about Jeff’s life. Stick to the teen fantasy flicks, Rob.
I’ve been asked several times for a caricature of Russell Brand, so I started sketching out a few ideas. This is a 10 minute ballpoint pen sketch, showing old Rusty with an uncharacteristically serious expression. I’ll probably try a few different refrence photos.
Good life drawing session today, felt really loose and had fun with it. Back to charcoal, after using pencils for a few weeks. I think the charcoal allows more freedom, and you have to work big, as you can’t get the fine line that you can with pencils. Sketches in the first image were 5 mins each, except for the bottom right which was 10 mins. The second image is a 10 minute sketch, and the last one is 30 minutes.
An iPhone app featuring 540 political caricatures by Tom Richmond was rejected by Apple last week for ‘ridiculing public figures’. But the ‘Bobble Rep’ app was approved a week later, after Tom wrote about the rejection on his blog, sparking off a media storm of protest.
There were plenty of naysayers claiming that the rejection was planned as a publicity stunt. You can read about it on Tom’s blog, and decide for yourself. The app is now available on the app store for £0.59 – Bargain!
My blog has been offline for a couple of months while I’ve been updating the site, so if you haven’t been following me on Facebook or Twitter, check out my recent sketches, life drawings and videos.
Here’s a quick recording I made of me sketching the Janitor from Scrubs. It’s fun to watch these back afterwards, I always pick up on a few things I could have done differently.
I’ve been doing a lot of ‘real’ sketching recently, so it’s been good to get back into the digital stuff. Feels like all the life drawing I’ve been doing has really helped with shape and form. If you enjoy the video, watch my other digital sketching videos.
Quick sketch of ‘gay magician’ Derren Brown, who ‘predicted’ the lottery numbers last week. The explanation show was interesting, if somewhat implausible, but I don’t believe the ‘camera trick’ theory either, seems a bit cheap for Derren. Probably the best explanation we’ll get is “It was a trick”.
Might work this up into a finished painting when I get time.
Been a bit slow on the caricature front recently, but I’ve been going to life drawing classes to try to improve my observation. Here’s a selection from the past few weeks.
Note: I removed the images from this post. You can see all of my life drawings here.
This is one I’ve done as a request for a friend. It’s painted digitally in Photoshop, but I’m getting printed out on canvas to see how it looks. I’m really happy how it turned out, both the likeness and the paintjob. I feel like it’s another step forward for me, and I’m really enjoying painting at the moment, both digitally and traditionally. Now…who’s next? I plan to do an ‘Inspirations’ series of painitings of people who are an ispiration to me. Bruce Lee and Thom Yorke are included. I can’t really say Zach Braff is an inspiration of mine, although I do find him amusing. Got some ideas for a few more paintings though. Stay tuned…
